The Black Lake Mine in Thetford Mines is in its 3rd year of the Black Lake mine stockpiles afforestation program. Aimed at finding methods conducive to the growth of trees in a particularly hostile environment (coarse substrate, wind, etc.), the project has already helped identify factors favourable to the establishment of certain species, while demonstrating that the growth potential for others is considered too low to hope for the establishment of a forest cover in the long term. Funded to the tune of $250,000 by the Green Fund and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT), the Partnership Research Program on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions will allow Viridis to develop methods for its revegetation project. These will notably enable the partner Granilake to complete its restoration plan. This research project will be completed in the fall of 2020, but the plantations will be monitored well beyond that date.
