– Professor Nicolas Bélanger of the Département Science et Technologie at Université TÉLUQ received a $368,104 grant under the Programme de recherche en partenariat sur la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre. This program is offered jointly by the Green Fund and FRQNT, and run by FRQNT, FRQSC and MESI.
The grant will enable Professor Bélanger to build a large carbon sink in the Chaudière-Appalaches region by rebuilding soils and afforesting old asbestos mines. The objectives of this project, carried out in collaboration with the Viridis Environmental and Granilake partners, are to first identify the tree species, origins and cultivars providing the best yields and the largest carbon sinks, and to improve amendment techniques through fertilizing residual materials and mechanical ground preparation to foster the trees’ growth.
